Preparing for the Dzukou Valley Trek: What to Pack & What to Expect

Dzukou Valley is a pristine wonderland devoid of luxury hotels and cell networks. Here is how to pack light, respect the environment, and enjoy an unforgettable trek.

The Trails: Viswema vs. Jakhama

There are two primary trailheads. The Viswema trail features a motorable road that a 4x4 vehicle can ascend, leaving a steep 1.5-hour climb up stone steps to the valley rim followed by 2 hours of gentle, flat walking along the ridge. The Jakhama route is steeper and more continuous throughout, making it ideal for the descent.

Facilities Inside the Valley

Dzukou has no hotels, no private bathrooms, and zero electricity grid. Travellers sleep in the SAYO Community Rest House or in high-altitude tents. Basic fire-cooked meals (rice, dal, seasonal greens) are prepared by caretakers. Bring a personal thermal sleeping bag if you want extra warmth, as nighttime temperatures regularly plunge below 2°C in autumn and winter.

Leave No Trace Policy

Dzukou is fiercely protected by the Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO). Single-use plastic is banned. Any waste you take into the valley must be packed back out in your bag and inspected at the trailhead checkpost.
