Planning Your Meghalaya Journey: Monsoon Roar vs. Winter Crystal Waters

Deciding when to travel to Meghalaya depends entirely on what you want to experience: torrential cascades crashing into misty gorges, or emerald transparent waters where boats look suspended in the air.

The Dry & Crystal Season: October to April

From November to April, Meghalaya enjoys crisp sunshine, mild daytime temperatures (16°C–22°C), and remarkably dry weather. This is the only period to witness the famous glass-bottom illusion on the Umngot River in Dawki and Shnongpdeng. The water is so transparent that river stones 15 feet below are distinctly visible. It is also the most comfortable time for hiking the 3,500 stone stairs to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat without slippery mud.

The Monsoon Wonder: June to September

Meghalaya means 'Abode of Clouds'. During the monsoon, Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Mawsynram receive some of the highest precipitation on planet Earth. Waterfalls like Nohkalikai, Dainthlen, and Seven Sisters roar at full volume, generating colossal mist plumes. While boat rides on Umngot turn murky and cliffside views can occasionally be blanketed by thick fog, monsoon travellers are treated to lush greenery, dramatic cloudscapes, and waterfalls at their most breathtaking.

Practical Tips for Travellers

1. Shillong evenings can be chilly year-round (often 8°C–12°C in winter); bring warm fleece layers. 2. Good grip shoes are mandatory for root bridge descents. 3. Always hire an experienced mountain driver familiar with fog-prone stretches along the Shillong-Sohra highway.
