Tawang Overland Guide: Sela Pass, Permits, and Acclimatization

Driving to Tawang is one of the grandest road trips in Asia. Here is how to plan your permits, vehicle choice, and night halts to avoid altitude sickness.

Why You Must Not Rush the Drive

Guwahati sits at just 180 feet above sea level. Tawang sits at 10,000 feet, and Sela Pass reaches 13,700 feet. Rushing this journey in a single day is both physically dangerous and operationally impractical. The ideal route includes an overnight acclimatization halt in Dirang (5,000 ft) or Bhalukpong. This gives your body time to adapt to lower oxygen levels before crossing Sela Pass.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) Regulations

All Indian tourists entering Arunachal Pradesh must possess a valid Inner Line Permit (ILP). Our team assists in obtaining e-ILPs online prior to departure. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), which requires a minimum of two individuals travelling together through a registered tour operator.

Bum La Pass & Madhuri Lake Protocol

Bum La Pass lies directly on the Indo-China Line of Actual Control at 15,200 feet. Due to strict military border regulations and district administration mandates, external commercial vehicles are not permitted into Bum La. Travellers must switch to local Tawang union 4x4 SUVs. Special military permissions must also be stamped in Tawang before the excursion.
